Check the railings that the man is holding onto and resting his foot on. It's located on a little Copenhagen traffic island where cyclists often wait, reports Copenhagenize.com.

The City of Copenhagen has implemented this double railing simply as a convenience for the cyclists who stop here. A high railing to grasp with your hand and a foot railing for putting your foot up, if that's what you fancy doing. Either way you can also use the railing to push off when the light changes.

The foot rest reads: "Hi, cyclist! Rest your foot here... and thank you for cycling in the city."

It certainly is a fine example of the City understanding human behaviour and basic anthropology.

May be this will help cheer you up! I discovered this little gem over at nadinoo. Lovely bicycle cafe day, part of the Dace's SS10 collection lookbook. This little pretty movie reminds me a bit of the one last year that Sophia Coppola created for Miss Dior Cherie - - Paris, bicycles.....

My hiatus is over, the new year is already 7 days old, time to move. What I've been up to you, you ask? Oh, you know, the usual. Kicking back in my peculiar way, seeing relatives for xmas, spending quality time with Lauren and celebrating that big ol' street party with friends and some more unwinding. A few excerpts of all those things related:

Lauren stepping up after stepping down from the plane

Post-Xmas city cycling

Street/bike view from Cafe 't Smalle in the Jordaan

Traffic heating up on Dam Square at 20 minutes to 12

A few minutes into the new year on Nieuwmarkt

Blurry canal tour boat view on some bridge bike parking

Colder, but the same

Colder, but the same

Colder, but the same

Waving their goodbyes

Air trail

Two fathers, three sons

King of the world

Take your banana time

Ice skating on Museum Square

And of course there's only one way to get there

Transport modes crossing paths at winter dusk, Leidsestraat

And just when you think it's all winding down...

Here's to nothing but the best (cycling) for you and your loved ones in 2010.

Look how fast you go when the streets are cleared for you

Look how fast you go when the streets are cleared for you

I know we've discussed this before (read here) but I just had to share with you these memorising sights of bike lanes in the Netherlands and Copenhagan.

Compare what you see below to this morning's news from The Guardian:

'Councils are spreading grit more thinly today in a bid to eke out supplies while they wait for much-needed deliveries of rock salt to combat a second day of ice and snow in southern England.

'Commuters have endured another morning of hazardous journeys to work, with roads left treacherous by icy conditions and rail services badly disrupted.

'Harrow council in north-west London described the grit supply situation as "pretty outrageous".

'The local authority spread about 40 tonnes around the borough last night, leaving it with 510 tonnes – not enough for four days of full gritting…'

The pics shown here are of course taken from the trusty Copenhagen Cycle Chic blog, showing how the city's well-dressed cyclists can enjoy a snow-free bike lane without risk of snow muddying their journey.

Copenhagan Bike Lane

Below is a video made by David Hembrow, a Brit abroad in Assen, Holland who has contrasted his local bike lane in summer with what it looks like in winter. As you'll see, he found that, with a council that cares about cyclists – there's no difference!

Stadiums draining cities

This seems like a lesson that every city needs to learn for itself, stop funding private (sport stadiums) with public money. There seems to be a notion that a stadium is for the good of all and will spur economic development around the surrounding areas. This might be true some times, for the most part stadiums drain the city coffers and produce little economic development. The Metro dome in Minneapolis is a great example. It is an island on the eastern edge of downtown. What economic development has it created? A sea of surface parking lots for game days, that is about it.

The NY Times has this great article that talks about how cities are cutting basic programs and services it provides to it citizens to fill budget gaps for stadiums:

From New Jersey to Ohio to Arizona, the stadiums were sold as a key to redevelopment and as the only way to retain sports franchises. But the deals that were used to persuade taxpayers to finance their construction have in many cases backfired, the result of overly optimistic revenue assumptions and the recession.

Nowhere is the problem more acute than in Cincinnati. In 1996, voters in Hamilton County approved an increase of half of one percent in the sales tax that promised to build and maintain stadiums for the Bengals and the Reds, pay Cincinnati's public schools and give homeowners an annual property tax rebate. The stadiums were supposed to spur development of the city's dilapidated riverfront.

But sales tax receipts have fallen so fast in the last year that the county is now scrambling to bridge a $14 million deficit in its sales tax fund. The public schools, which deferred taking their share for years, want their money.

Is this really good business and management? We need leaders that can deal with sports teams, but also make the tough decisions that if they don't get a new stadium they might pick up and leave. In the future that might just be a chance that some cities might need to take to make sure that can maintain the current standard of services. As much as people like to take in a game locally, my day to day quality of life issue are a bigger priority for me.
