Budapest Infrastructure

Budapest Bike Lane_1
The City of Budapest is doing what they can to improve safety and facilities for cyclists. The city enjoys a very respectable 4% modal share for bikes and there is a lot of focus on improving that and mainstreaming urban cycling. There are several stretches with bike lanes, like above.
Budapest Bike Box
I rode past this bike box when visiting.
Budapest Bike Light
I saw several examples of traffic lights for bikes.
Budapest Bike Rack
A filled bike rack is always a healthy sign.
Budapest Bike Lane
Shared lanes never hurt. While we're waiting for cycle tracks anyway.

All in all it's positive in Budapest. Loads of work to be done, including the classic task of convincing their politicians and Department of Transport of the necessity of constantly improving the infrastructure and mainstreaming bicycle culture.
Copenhagenize the planet. And have a lovely day.

There is so much to say about Interbike. I am going to start with my most exciting discovery. Linus.

Can I tell you how excited I am to show these to you? I had somehow not heard of this company until the last day at Interbike. I am so embarrassed because they are local. Any way. I just stumbled upon them and about fainted at the beauty of these bikes. They are so pretty and at a decent price. I did not have a chance to take them for a test ride but I plan on making a trip out there this week to do that. Linus Bikes are awesome at first and second glance. From my overexcited brief examination of the bikes they are really nicely made compared to other similar bikes. Adam was not even phased by how excitedly giddy I was when I saw their booth. I can't wait to get to know these bikes better. I actually think I saw one of these bikes in my neighborhood on Monday of this week but did not have my camera out and was on foot and could not catch up to the woman riding the shiny red dutch style bike (possibly a Dutchi?).

Interbike Carbon Drive 1

The sign says:
Wear white pants while riding to the coffee shop, stand in a crowded elevator with your bike, throw it into the back of your friends new car.

I love that they are taking the idea of living with your bike and providing a way to make that easier.

Interbike Carbon Drive 2

Gates Carbon Drive is a great idea that seems that it would work well with internal hub gears and city bikes. Since I haven't tested it that is only a guess. It definitely would work well on fixies. I have a bike that I may be able to put this on which would be nice since it doesn't have a full chain case and I love wide legged pants.

Tour de Fat rolled through town this past Saturday and was the ballyhoo of bikes and beer it promised to be. Thousands of people came out enjoyed the day celebrating bikes, listening to an amazing line-up of entertainment and enjoying New Belgium Brewery's tasty portfolio of beer. A big FAT thank you to our dear friends at New Belgium Brewery for making the whole kit and caboodle possible -- together we raised over $38,000 for the SF Bicycle Coalition and the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council! See photos of the day at sfgate.com and on flickr.com.

Hi-fives all around! Thanks to the 150+ awesome volunteers who made Tour de Fat a smooth success. And thanks to the Clean City Coalition for helping us keep the event green by handling all of the recycling and compost! Not only was trash kept from the landfill, but the entire event was solar-powered, and 970 bikes were parked with the SF Bicycle Coalition's complimentary Bike Valet. One car was even taken off the road for good when Ana Marie Quinonez committed to going car-free, donating her car to the SF Bicycle Coalition in trade for a beautiful new bicycle courtesy of New Belgium Brewery and the SF Bicycle Coalition!
