Sometimes listening to English people talk about cycling safety is akin to listening to Americans debating gun control: cultural Neanderthals both.
Read this report by the BBC and the comments it generates, and you glance at a clueless nation.
Take the comments by Chief Inspector Graham Horwood of the Met Police Traffic Unit.
"It's often that they are in the wrong place at the wrong time and circumstances get to a certain point where they end up in these positions.
"You can't always blame the cyclists and you can't always blame the lorry drivers, it's a mix of who's responsible."
Until someone has the courage to fire Mr. Harwood and all other idiots who say "Accidents happen", London will never be a great cycling city.
Look at the drawing in the BBC article (below). Where else in the world is option 2 the advised way to approach a junction? I do take option 2 but that is an indictment of the abysmal state of cycling facilities in this city. It is a manoevre that requires skill. It is criminal to advise it as the safe option to people who are new to cycling.
