The Flashbak all lit up
Here are A2W, we are proponents of buying local whenever possible. Fortunately when it comes to bicycles and bike related items, there are a growing number of local businesses offering some great and unique items for the cyclist.
Earlier this year, we created a Local Bike Shop Guide and added links by region and specialty to the side bar. Later, we added bicycle frame builders. Now, we've added Cycling Related Companies. The businesses listed here are based in Austin and make products to improve your cycling experience.
From caps and bags to high end wheels and internal hubs, this is a pretty diverse list. Let us know if we've missed anyone.
Actual Hardware (aH)
Actual Hardware designs and manufactures bicycle components in here in Austin, Texas. Poducts are open source – designs and manufacturing instructions are available their site. Their initial product is a 15 mm nut wrench with more to come.
Chronic Cycling
We reviewed this local producer of technical shirts with Argyle and Flying Fixed gear designs among others. Chronic also offers custom designs for club and team cycling kits.
F3 Designs
One of the sponsors of the Dirt Derby series, F3 Designs hand makes unique cycling caps and a cool frame bag that fits in the front triangle of your bike frame.
Fallbrook Technologies
With offices in Austin in addition to San Diego, Fallbrook makes the innovative NuVinci variable internal hub. Unlike traditional geared systems, the NuVinci hubs have no gears instead being one continuous range. Look for these hubs on utility bikes from makers like Batavus and Raleigh or retro fit your bike with mountain bike rear dropout spacing.
Feetbelts
Using recycled automobile seat belts, this San Marcos operation makes foot straps for your pedals in a earth friendly, urban looking package. Available online or at many local bike shops.
Flashbak
Thursday Night Social Ride regular Brad Beneski created this large flashing array to help cyclists be better seen at night. Check out our recent review of the Flashbak for more info.
Grease Monkey Wipes
A must have for the traveling mechanic, Grease Monkey Wipes use an environmentally safe citrus cleaning solution to remove that pesky bike grease. Available in small, portable packs for cleaning on the go.
Kongko Designs
A local designer of cycling cap just getting started, Kongko Designs offers as funky and creative a design of custom cycling cap as you are willing to sport.
Kurban Trash Co
Kurban Trash Co focuses on recycling trash to cycling treasure with cool bags and pouches.
Limit Sixty Six
These are maker of some very unusual shirts that put bike and pop culture in a blender with some great results including my recent fav Emilio Zapata in a "Ya Basta" cycling cap.
Nimble
After suffering a catastrophic fire that destroyed all their inventory last year, Nimble is back with high end components like aero and super light weight wheels, hubs, and skewers.
Psychlist: Subversive Cycling
Psychlist makes messenger bags, wallets, caps, and top tube covers plus some subversive cycling shirts with my favorite (not work safe.)
